An annual congregation in the central Indian city of Bhopal has lured Muslim scholars and thousands of the faithful from around the world to energize Muslims to follow the steps of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).
“This was my first visit to Bhopal. I hope to come again next year,” Mohammad Murtaza, an Indian Muslim, told OnIslam.net on Wednesday, November 28.
“We really need to fight against our self-desire and lead the life as shown our Prophet.”
Nearly a million Muslims from India and around the world came in droves to attend the 65th annual Aalami Tabligi Ijtema, which opened in Bhopal earlier this week.
Dozens of leading Muslim scholars attended the event, including Maulana Zubair-ul-Hasan, Saad-ul-Hasan, Ahmad Laat, Mustaqeem, Chiraghuddin and Shaukat Ali, to deliver sermons on the life and practices of Prophet Muhammad and Islamic Shari`ah.
Addressing the congregation, which concluded on Monday, Muslim scholar Saad-ul-Hassan urged Muslims to fight self-desire.
“We must show mercy to each other. Violence of any kind is against the very principle of Islam,” he told the crowd.
“No human being has the right to cause harm to anyone as it is against Islamic norms.”
Another noted scholar Maulana Zubair asked people to share cordial relationship with their neighbors.
“We must fulfill our responsibilities as neighbors. Our act should not harm anyone in the locality,” he said.
“Islam is a religion which teaches us to maintain good relations with our neighbors,” he said. “Islamic teachings should be put in practice.”
Spirituality
Many Muslims were jubilant about attending the annual congregation.
“I have learnt a lot about Islam during the last three days,” Alamgir from Andhra Pradesh told OnIslam.net.
“Now is the time to put them into practice and teach others in our family about the way one should lead his life.”
Special arrangements were made by the organizing committee to help attendees make use of the speeches delivered by scholars.
Sermons were translated in sign language by trained instructors in order to help the deaf understand the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
More than 500 groups from India and abroad also participated in the three-day congregation.
“I really feel happy to help people coming from different places by providing them free water and tea,” said Bindeshwar Prasad, a Hindu who lives close to the venue.
“They speak about peace and brotherhood. We all want peace in this world. I really like their teachings and discipline during these three days.”
Mathura Das, another resident, is also happy.
“Spirituality pervades the city during this time of the year as so many people from different nationalities participate in this religious program.
“I really feel happy to be resident of this city.”
The congregation saw 380 marriages, which were performed in a simple manner without fanfare.
“We should avoid unnecessary expenditure and show-off in marriages,” Maulana Zubair said.
“Marriage is a simple affair in Islam and we should not forget that simplicity is one of the basic rules of Islam.”
